Moonlight, the 2017 Best Picture Oscar winner, is heading back to theaters for a tenth anniversary re-release from A24 on October 2, in a new 4K remastered cut. Tickets for the re-release are on sale now.
Director and co-writer Barry Jenkins announced the news at a special Telluride Film Festival screening of the film.
Moonlight follows a young Black man grappling with his identity and sexuality across childhood, adolescence and adulthood. The film starred Trevante Rhodes, Ashton Sanders, Alex R. Hibbert, Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris, Janelle Monáe, André Holland, Jharrel Jerome, and Jaden Piner.
The re-release will include an exclusive conversation with Jenkins, Oscar-nominated composer Nicholas Britell and Oscar winner Mahershala Ali, along with a limited edition anniversary art print available for purchase.
Moonlight premiered in 2016 and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, along with Best Supporting Actor for Ali and Best Adapted Screenplay for Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney.
At the 2017 Oscars, a mix up of envelopes by a PricewaterhouseCoopers accountant led presenter Faye Dunaway to read La La Land as the Best Picture winner. The accountant had mistakenly handed Dunaway and her co-presenter Warren Beatty the backup envelope for Best Actress, which La La Land’s Emma Stone had won. La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz took the stage and realized Moonlight had actually won, announcing the correction live.
Moonlight grossed $27.8 million domestically and close to $67 million worldwide.
