NBC Orders Five More Episodes For Upcoming Comedy 'St. Denis Medical'

NBC has expanded the initial episode order of its new hospital mockumentary, “St. Denis Medical,” by adding five more episodes, bringing the first season’s total to 18. This decision underscores the network’s confidence in the show’s potential success.

“St. Denis Medical” is set in a struggling Oregon hospital and follows the lives of its dedicated yet overwhelmed medical staff. The show stars David Alan Grier as ER doctor Ron, Wendi McClendon-Covey as executive director Joyce, Allison Tolman as supervising nurse Alex, Josh Lawson as trauma surgeon Bruce, Mekki Leeper as new nurse Matt, Kahyun Kim as emergency nurse Serena, and Kaliko Kauahi as veteran nurse Val.

“St. Denis Medical” was created by Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin, both of whom are serving as executive producers along with Simon Heuer. Ruben Fleischer directed and executive produced the pilot. The series is produced by Universal Television in association with Spitzer Holding Company.

The show was initially ordered as a pilot in February 2023, following a production commitment in August 2022, and was officially greenlit in June 2023. NBC announced at their May upfronts that “St. Denis Medical” would occupy the Tuesday 8 p.m. slot, previously held by “Superstore,” though an exact premiere date is yet to be set.

Spitzer and Ledgin have a history of collaboration, having worked together on NBC’s “Superstore” and “American Auto.” Both are currently under overall deals with Universal Television.

NBC’s decision to expand the episode order came as production on the original 13 episodes was concluding, allowing for a seamless continuation in filming. The network’s confidence in the series was further demonstrated during an offsite meeting where a subsequent episode received positive feedback from top NBCUniversal executives.

“St. Denis Medical” is part of NBC’s fall 2024 lineup, joining other new comedies such as “Happy’s Place” starring Reba McEntire. The mockumentary will be available for viewing on NBC and for streaming on Peacock the day after broadcast.
