car wash tv remake

NBC is reviving the beloved 1976 Universal Pictures film “Car Wash” as a modern-day TV comedy series. This reimagining is being spearheaded by acclaimed producer Malcolm D. Lee, known for “The Best Man” franchise, and writer Opey Olagbaju, celebrated for his work on “Bob Hearts Abishola” and “Close Enough.” The series, developed by Universal Television, will bring a fresh yet nostalgic take on the cult classic.

Set in a contemporary Washington D.C. car wash, the show will delve into the generational and cultural clashes within an immigrant family, focusing on the dynamic between father and son, as well as their eclectic group of employees. This setup echoes the original film’s exploration of diverse characters and their interactions within the car wash setting, now expanded for the television format.

Fans of the 1976 movie will recognize thematic and narrative similarities in the TV adaptation. The original film, directed by Michael Schultz, was celebrated for its portrayal of a day in the lives of a group of Los Angeles friends working at the Dee-Luxe Car Wash, interacting with a host of colorful characters. The TV series aims to expand on this premise, leveraging the episodic format to delve deeper into the characters’ stories and relationships.

The ensemble cast of the original “Car Wash” featured a host of notable names, including Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Franklyn Ajaye, Bill Duke, Pepe Serna, Sully Boyar, the Pointer Sisters, and Garrett Morris. While it’s too early for casting announcements, the potential for cameos from original cast members like Ajaye, Duke, Serna, and Morris could provide nostalgic appeal for longtime fans.

Opey Olagbaju, a Nigerian American writer and comedian, brings a rich background in comedy to the project, having contributed to hit shows like CBS’s “Bob Hearts Abishola,” Hulu’s “This Fool,” and Max’s animated series “Close Enough.” He will executive produce alongside Malcolm D. Lee, whose recent work includes writing and directing “The Best Man: The Final Chapters” for Peacock. Dominique Telson, known for her work on “The Best Man: The Final Chapters” and the indie film “Good Girl Jane,” will also serve as an executive producer. Michael Allen joins the team as co-executive producer.
