Netflix Renews ‘Crew Girl’ for Season 2 After Viewership More Than Doubled in Its Second Week

There will be more Crew Girl in our future. Netflix has renewed the popular YA drama for a second season, just under two weeks after its September 10 premiere.

Written by Vivian Lin and developed alongside Morwyn Brebner, Crew Girl follows Teagan Tao (Miku Martineau), a rising star in single sculls rowing whose future is capsized by a family scandal. Forced to relocate to the East Coast with her mother, Ella (Jessica Paré), Teagan starts over at the elite Easton Prep, where there’s no girls’ rowing team to join. Her only way back on the water is to take the helm of the school’s notoriously dysfunctional all-boys varsity crew as their coxswain, leading a team that doesn’t want her while juggling messy romantic entanglements, betrayed friendships, and her own complicated relationship with her mom.

The cast includes Sam Braun as Josh Regis, Kyle Clark as Cam Dillinger, and Thomas Cadrot as Coach Matt Hayden, the crew’s coach at Easton Prep, a role that marks Cadrot’s first-ever series regular part. The ensemble also includes Jude Wilson, Sage Linder, Hana Huggins, Jarrett Carlington, Alaska Leigh, and Olga Petsa.

Season 1 ended with Teagan seemingly settling her love triangle between Josh and Cam after sharing a kiss with Cam, only for her rival Britney (Linder) to resurface with a new offer: an all-girls rowing team, this time at Easton Prep itself. Lin described the dynamic between Teagan and Britney as more complicated than simple romantic rivalry. “I find their relationship very complicated. Yes, Josh sort of started [it] but it’s not really about Josh. It’s about these two [girls] who are incredibly competent at the top of their game because they suss each other out the first time that they meet each other,” she said. “And it’s like, ‘I don’t want to lose to you’ is always in both of their minds. So, what does that look like? And now on the water?”

The renewal comes on the back of a rapid viewership climb. According to Netflix, the series has topped 16 million views and reached the Top 10 in more than 90 countries since its debut. The show pulled in 5.2 million views in its first four days of release, then more than doubled that pace in its first full week, hitting 11.3 million views and 70.1 million hours viewed, enough to jump from No. 4 to No. 2 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 English-Language Shows chart, trailing only Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story‘s 12.1 million-view debut.

Martineau shared her excitement over the renewal in a statement. “I am beyond excited for Crew Girl season two! There’s so much left to explore with the characters, the romances, and the rowing team, it’s going to be a ride for sure!” she said. “All I know is that it will definitely be a packed, juicy, drama filled second season so I’m ready to get back in a boat and on camera! #teamteagan”

Crew Girl is produced by Blue Ant Studios. Lin serves as writer, showrunner, and executive producer, alongside fellow executive producers Jeff Norton, Lindsay Macadam, Hillary Zwick Turner, Tony Chung, Lori Massini, Matthew Hornburg, Mark J.W. Bishop, and Jennifer McCarron.

A premiere date for Season 2 has not yet been announced.
