Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for Straw, the upcoming thriller from Tyler Perry starring Taraji P. Henson, and confirmed its premiere date for June 6. The emotionally charged drama follows a single mother’s descent into chaos over the course of one harrowing day.
Shot in just four days, the film marks another fast-paced production under Perry’s direction and continues his creative partnership with the streamer.
Henson stars as Janiyah, a working mother whose world begins to unravel when she’s wrongfully accused while trying to cash a check to help her sick daughter. As the day spirals from bad to worse to catastrophic, she’s left to navigate a system that repeatedly fails her. At its core, Straw examines what happens when a woman on the margins is pushed beyond her limits in a society that offers no safety net.
Joining Henson is a cast that includes Sherri Shepherd, Teyana Taylor, Glynn Turman, Sinbad, Rockmond Dunbar, Mike Merrill, and Ashley Versher. Perry serves as writer, director, and producer, alongside Tony L. Strickland and Angi Bones.
The trailer premiered exclusively on Sherri, with Henson and Shepherd debuting the emotional first look. New stills and key art were also released, showcasing moments of quiet urgency and explosive tension that highlight the film’s raw tone and grounded performances.
To mark the launch, Netflix hosted an intimate dinner at Tatiana Restaurant in New York City, where Henson, Shepherd, and Taylor were joined by industry leaders including Mara Brock Akil, Gayle King, Michelle Buteau, and Tamron Hall. The event centered around the film’s themes of survival, sisterhood, and systemic failure, with curated cocktails from Seven Daughters.
Straw continues Perry’s ongoing slate with Netflix, which includes recent titles like Mea Culpa and upcoming projects such as The Six Triple Eight and the drama series Beauty in Black.
