Because They’re Funny is the brainchild of the producers behind the American Black Film Festival. The festival aims to propel a new generation of comedic artists to stardom while promoting diversity within the comedy industry. The centerpiece event, the “2023 Breakout Comedian Of The Year Competition Finals,” will kick off on Friday, October 6. Hosted by BTF’s ambassador, Anthony Anderson, this competition seeks to unearth emerging comedians from all corners of the world and guide them towards successful careers in Hollywood. With over 300 submissions to date, only six finalists will have the chance to perform at BTF, competing for a grand prize of $20,000 and the opportunity to be signed by the renowned Innovative Artists talent agency.

“We’re thrilled to bring The Breakout Comedian of The Year competition to life as the showpiece event of Because They’re Funny,” shared NICE CROWD founder and CEO Jeff Friday, alongside President Nicole Friday. “With the help of our friend, Anthony Anderson, we will showcase the diversity that exists in the world of comedy, bringing six talented artists to DC for a chance to be launched to stardom. Because They’re Funny provides emerging acts with the chance to share the stage with some of the biggest names in comedy, many of whom started their careers right here in Washington, DC.”

The festival’s exciting lineup also includes the not-to-be-missed “Hey Ladies Fierce Female Comedy Show” on Saturday evening at The Anthem. This event will feature some of the most talented female comedians in the business, including Luenell, Aida Rodriguez, Ego Nwodim, Nicole Byer, and more, bringing the house down with their uproarious humor.

Sunday’s headline event will illuminate D.C. as a thriving hub for comedy, showcasing the exclusive D.C. premiere of “The Mecca of Comedy.” Directed by Parrish Smith, this documentary delves into the rich legacy of Black comedy in the region, offering audiences a deeper appreciation for the genre’s history and impact. Following the documentary’s premiere, the esteemed Yvonne Orji will take center stage to host the “DMV Black Comedy Homecoming Show.” This extraordinary evening of laughter will celebrate the top standup comics from the D.C. area, including Donnell Rawlings, Red Grant, Pierre, Joe Clair, Tony Woods, and more, as they return to their beloved hometown for this special occasion.

“We are excited to launch the inaugural world-class comedy festival, Because They’re Funny, in the nation’s capital and work with Jeff and Nicole Friday of NICE CROWD,” expressed Angie M. Gates, President and CEO of Events DC. “DC has historically been a hub for comedic talent, and Events DC looks forward to being a part of that tradition by providing a backdrop for comedy to be showcased. The DC Wharf is the perfect location, and the economic impact for the District is welcomed. From the use of our local venues, The Anthem, Pearl Street Warehouse, and Union Stage, to tourists visiting the spectacular restaurants and cultural attractions on the Wharf, we could not ask for a better event to attract visitors to our beloved city this October.”

The festival’s headline shows will be held at The Anthem, with various other events, including panels, podcasts, screenings, workshops, networking opportunities, and open mic nights, taking place at different venues throughout The Wharf, such as Union Stage and Pearl Street Warehouse.

Because They’re Funny Comedy Festival, presented in partnership with Events DC, promises to be an unforgettable experience for comedy enthusiasts and industry professionals alike.
