The Broadway revival of Shakespeare’s Othello, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, has found its home at the Barrymore Theatre and secured dates for its limited-run. It also announced tickets going on sale as early as tomorrow, September 6.
Directed by Tony Award winner Kenny Leon, previews begin on Monday, February 24, 2025 for a Sunday, March 23, 2025 opening night, playing a strictly limited 15-week engagement at the Barrymore through Sunday, June 8.
In Othello, Washington will play the noble Moor of Venice and commanding warrior-general opposite Gyllenhaal as the ambitious lieutenant and masterful manipulator Iago. Spurned for promotion, Iago’s relentless quest for vengeance against Othello and his wife, Desdemona (Osborne), plunges them into a shocking web of deception and betrayal.
The production’s creative team’s lineup includes Derek McLane for scenic design, Dede Ayite for costume design, Natasha Katz for lighting design, Justin Ellington for sound design, and Mia Neal for hair and wig design
This revival marks the first Broadway staging of Othello since the 1982 production, which starred James Earl Jones, Christopher Plummer, and Dianne Wiest.
Brian Anthony Moreland, Kandi Burruss along with her husband, Todd Tucker are producing Othello alongside a lengthy list of co-producers, which includes Devale Ellis, Lu-Shawn M. Thompson, Lamar Richardson, Branden Grimmett, Christen James, and Willette & Manny Klausner.
The rest of the co-producers include Adam Zotovich, Richard Batchelder, Ken Davenport, Lassen D’Arrigo, Score 3 Partners, Cohen-Willman Productions, 11:11 Experience, 42nd.club, Hunter Arnold, Craig Balsam, Slater Bernon Butterfield, Goehring Turchin Alperson, Great Shakes Productions, Marguerite Steed Hoffman, The John Gore Organization, Scott H. Mauro, Stephanie P. McClelland, Carl Moellenberg, Renard McGill, Dan Stone, Cynthia Stroum, The Araca Group, Daryl Roth, Tom Tuft, Lloyd Tichio Productions, and The Shubert Organization.
Other key contributors include Claire Warden as intimacy director, Narda E. Alcorn as production stage manager, and casting directors ARC / Duncan Stewart, CSA & Jarrett Reiche. 101 Productions, Ltd. will serve as the general managers for the show.
The Barrymore was last home to Othello almost 90 years ago when a production played in rep with Macbeth in September and October of 1935. Leon’s production of Our Town opens this fall in the same theater. Washington performed in the 2014 production of A Raisin in the Sun, also directed by Leon, at the theater.
