For Black women who’ve spent a lifetime carrying their families, communities, and relationships through difficult seasons, Iyanla Vanzant is bringing something increasingly rare back to primetime: a space where pain isn’t hidden and vulnerability is met with compassion instead of judgment.
OWN has announced premiere dates for two new OWN Spotlight specials from the Emmy-winning spiritual teacher, bestselling author, and life coach, airing Friday, October 9 and Friday, October 16 at 9 PM ET/PT. Together, the specials tackle generational fractures between mothers and daughters and the growing disconnect between Black men and Black women, issues many people quietly struggle with but rarely discuss openly. Vanzant’s approach isn’t limited to naming what’s broken; she pushes participants toward repair, reconnection, and the understanding that can emerge when people commit to telling the truth.
The first special, “Mothers & Daughters: Torn Apart with Iyanla Vanzant,” airs October 9 and brings together three generations of mothers and daughters confronting painful truths and working to break destructive cycles in front of a live studio audience of women. The second, “What Black Men Say vs. What Black Women Hear with Iyanla Vanzant,” airs October 16 and convenes a live audience for an honest, emotionally charged conversation exploring the communication gap between Black men and Black women.
The specials mark Vanzant’s return to a live audience format for the first time in years, arriving on the heels of the number one premiere of “Iyanla: The Inside Fix” among African American women. They’re part of OWN’s Spotlight banner, which features candid conversations and documentaries hosted by Oprah Winfrey and other creators, spotlighting stories and issues shaping Black communities.
“The wounds between mothers and daughters, and the disconnect between men and women, are rarely about what happened in a single moment,” Vanzant said. “They are often the result of generations of unmet needs, unspoken truths, and unheard hearts. Healing begins when we are willing to listen beyond our pain, speak beyond our fear, and see one another beyond our stories. When we do the sacred work of mending what has been broken, we don’t just transform our relationships; we transform ourselves. And in that transformation, families heal, love deepens, and a new legacy becomes possible.”
Both specials air on OWN, with streaming availability the following day on discovery+ and HBO Max. They are produced by Bunim/Murray Productions, a Banijay Americas company, for OWN.
