My Spy: The Eternal City trailer

Amazon’s Prime Video has released the trailer for “My Spy: The Eternal City,” the sequel to the 2020 hit family action comedy “My Spy.” The original film, starring Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman, gained unexpected popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The first “My Spy” introduced viewers to JJ (Bautista), a tough CIA operative who finds himself at the mercy of Sophie (Coleman), a clever nine-year-old girl, during an undercover mission to surveil her family. Written by Jon and Erich Hoeber and directed by Pete Segal, the film became the third most-watched on SVOD in 2020, following Disney+’s “Hamilton” and Prime Video’s “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.”

In “My Spy: The Eternal City,” set for a global release on Prime Video on July 18, Sophie, now a teenager, persuades JJ to chaperone her school choir trip to Italy. Their adventure takes a dangerous turn when they become unwittingly involved in an international terrorist plot targeting CIA Chief David Kim (Ken Jeong) and his son Collin (Taeho K), who is also Sophie’s best friend.

Kristen Schaal returns in her role as JJ’s tech-savvy partner Bobbi, alongside new cast members Anna Faris, Craig Robinson, and Flula Borg. Pete Segal once again directs, co-writing the script with Jon and Erich Hoeber, who also helped develop the story.

The film is produced by Chris Bender and Jake Weiner for Good Fear Content, Bautista and Jonathan Meisner for Dogbone Entertainment, and Segal, Robert Simonds, and Gigi Pritzker for Madison Wells. Executive producers include Jon and Erich Hoeber, Adam Fogelson, Sam Brown, and Rachel Shane from Madison Wells.

The trailer offers a glimpse into the exciting journey through Europe’s historic locales, where Sophie’s choir is set to perform for the Pope in Vatican City. What begins as a scenic school trip quickly escalates into a high-stakes mission as JJ and Sophie must thwart a terrorist plot.

In addition to reprising his role in “My Spy: The Eternal City,” Dave Bautista has several major projects lined up. He will be seen in “The Killer’s Game” alongside Pom Klementieff and has roles in “Trap House,” “Aang: The Last Airbender,” “The Last Showgirl,” and “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas.”

“My Spy: The Eternal City” premieres on Prime Video on July 18. Watch the trailer now to see JJ and Sophie’s latest adventure unfold.
