Changes are on the horizon for ‘Saturday Night Live’ as it gears up for its landmark 50th season. Punkie Johnson, a standout comedian on the show, has announced her departure after four memorable seasons.
Johnson broke the news during her comedy show, later confirming it on Instagram with a heartfelt video. “After four seasons, I will not be returning to ‘SNL’ for the 50th,” she shared. “It’s no bad blood, it’s no bridges burnt, it’s no hard feelings. ‘SNL’ was a dream I didn’t even know I could achieve. I was part of one of the most elite institutions in comedy, and I’m so grateful for it… but my time there has come to an end.”
Her news also comes following announcement that Maya Rudolph will be returning to portray Kamala Harris through the presidential election.
Joining the show in 2020, Johnson, whose real name is Jessica Williams, quickly became a fan favorite. She made history as the show’s eighth Black female cast member and its second Black LGBTQ+ woman, following Danitra Vance. Her repertoire included spot-on impressions of figures like Vice President Kamala Harris, Nicki Minaj, Queen Latifah, Harriet Tubman, Angel Reese, and Ice Spice.
In her Instagram video, Johnson assured fans her exit was on good terms. “I love my people! I didn’t think none of this was going to be a big deal,” she joked. “See, this is why Dave Chappelle makes people lock up their phones.”
Beyond ‘SNL,’ Johnson has appeared in various series such as ‘Space Force,’ ‘A Black Lady Sketch Show,’ and ‘Corporate.’ Her departure marks a significant shift for ‘SNL,’ which is also celebrating its 50th season with a movie about its historic pilot episode set for release in October.
