Rihanna Goes Blue as She Leads the Smurfs on a Wild Adventure [TRAILER]

Rihanna is going blue! The first trailer for The Smurfs Movie just dropped, giving us a sneak peek at the Grammy winner’s take on Smurfette. While we’re not getting new music (at least not yet), the trailer kicks off with Rihanna’s 2007 hit “Please Don’t Stop the Music” as she narrates the teaser. And from the looks of it, she’s about to lead the Smurfs on one wild adventure.

In this animated reimagining, Papa Smurf (voiced by John Goodman) gets mysteriously snatched by two evil wizards—Razamel and Gargamel. Smurfette (Rihanna) steps up as the unexpected hero, leading the Smurfs into the real world on a mission to save him. Along the way, they meet new allies and discover their true destiny—because apparently, the fate of the entire universe is on the line.

This cast list is stacked. Rihanna and Goodman are joined by Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer, along with James Corden, Nick Offerman, JP Karliak, Dan Levy, Amy Sedaris, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh, Nick Kroll, Hannah Waddingham, Alex Winter, Maya Erskine, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña, and Kurt Russell. Basically, as Paramount’s Brian Robbins put it, they’ve assembled “pretty much the rest of the Screen Actors Guild.”

The Smurfs have been around forever—since 1958, to be exact. Belgian artist Peyo first introduced them in his comic Johan and Pirlouit, and they blew up in the ‘80s thanks to the Smurfs cartoon series. Since then, they’ve jumped to the big screen with live-action/animated hybrids like The Smurfs (2011) and The Smurfs 2 (2013), but this upcoming film is going fully animated.

Beyond voicing Smurfette, Rihanna is also producing the film alongside Ryan Harris, Laurence “Jay” Brown, and Tyran “Ty-Ty” Smith. She’s even contributing original music—so while we don’t hear new tracks in the trailer, chances are the soundtrack will have some fresh RiRi vibes.

The Smurfs Movie hits theaters on July 2025—just in time to bring some Smurf-tastic energy to summer. Until then, we’ll be keeping an eye out for more Rihanna-led Smurf shenanigans.
