RJ Cyler Joins Keke Palmer in ‘The ‘Burbs’ Series Remake – Nzinga Stewart to Direct Pilot

Peacock’s upcoming remake of The ‘Burbs has added some key new faces to its cast. RJ Cyler (The Harder They Fall, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) joins Keke Palmer, who was already confirmed as part of the series. Cyler will appear alongside a strong group of recurring guest stars, including Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense), Justin Kirk (Angels in America), Kyrie McAlpin (Cheaper by the Dozen), Danielle Kennedy (Narcos), and Randy Oglesby (For All Mankind).

They’ll join previously announced cast members Palmer, Jack Whitehall, Julia Duffy, Paula Pell, Mark Proksch, and Kapil Talwalkar, who will round out the ensemble.

This new take on the 1989 cult classic follows a young couple who reluctantly move into the husband’s childhood home. Their suburban life takes a turn when new neighbors move in across the street, bringing with them long-buried secrets and dangerous threats that upend the tranquility of their quiet neighborhood.

The ‘Burbs series is adapted by Celeste Hughey (Palm Royale, Dead to Me), with Nzingha Stewart directing the first episode. Executive producers include Palmer, Hughey, Rachel Shukert, and Brian Grazer (who produced the original film), along with Seth MacFarlane, Erica Huggins, and Aimee Carlson under the Fuzzy Door banner. The series continues Peacock’s strategy of reimagining classic Universal properties.

The 1989 film, directed by Joe Dante and starring Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher, earned over $49 million at the box office and developed a loyal fan base for its unique mix of suburban satire and dark humor. Now, this modern reimagining promises to bring that same suspense and wit, with a fresh take on the original material.

Filming will take place on the Universal Studios backlot in Los Angeles, the same location used for the original film. With the rising popularity of mystery comedies like Only Murders in the Building and Peacock’s own Poker Face, The ‘Burbs series is poised to captivate both longtime fans and new viewers looking for a thrilling yet comedic suburban story.
