Regina King, the Oscar-winning actress, is set to portray political trailblazer Shirley Chisholm in an upcoming film titled “Shirley.” The movie, written and directed by John Ridley, another Oscar winner for his screenplay in “12 Years a Slave,” chronicles Chisholm’s groundbreaking run for president in 1972. Notably, Chisholm became the first Black candidate to seek a major party’s nomination for the presidency, following her historic election as the first Black woman in the US Congress in 1968.

“Shirley” unfolds the inspirational story of Shirley Chisholm’s audacious 1972 presidential campaign, breaking boundaries in the political landscape. The film will give an “intimate, behind-the-scenes portrait of the ground-breaking political leader.”

The cast of “Shirley” includes Regina King as Chisholm, alongside Lance Reddick, Lucas Hedges, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Christina Jackson, Michael Cherrie, Dorian Crossmond Missick, Amirah Vann, W. Earl Brown, Brad James, Reina King, André Holland, and Terrence Howard.
Ridley is producing alongside Anikah McLaren and Elizabeth Haggard for Participant, and Regina King and Reina King for Royal Ties Productions. Jeff Skoll and Ted Gidlow are exec producing.
Netflix is set to release “Shirley” on March 22, 2024, allowing viewers to delve into the historical narrative of Shirley Chisholm’s remarkable journey.
