DreamWorks Animation has officially unveiled the first teaser for Shrek 5, offering a glimpse into the next chapter of the beloved franchise. Notably, Shrek and Fiona’s children are now grown, and Zendaya has been revealed as the voice of one of their daughters. The teaser suggests that her character is less than pleased with the latest revelation from the Magic Mirror, setting the stage for an intriguing new adventure.
Zendaya’s involvement in Shrek 5 marks a significant addition to the long-running animated series. She joins returning cast members Mike Myers (Shrek), Cameron Diaz (Fiona), and Eddie Murphy (Donkey), bringing fresh energy to the film’s ensemble.
One of the most sought-after talents in Hollywood, Zendaya’s current slate includes Dune: Messiah, the fourth Spider-Man installment, and Euphoria season three. In 2023, she led Challengers, Luca Guadagnino’s critically acclaimed tennis drama, and starred in Dune: Part Two. Her presence in Shrek 5 is expected to attract new audiences while reinvigorating the franchise for longtime fans.
Shrek 5 is directed by franchise veterans Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon, alongside co-director Brad Ableson (Minions: The Rise of Gru). Dohrn has been deeply involved in the Shrek series, having served as a writer on Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third, as well as head of story on Shrek Forever After.
Producers Gina Shay and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri are overseeing the project, with Universal and DreamWorks Animation setting a theatrical release date of December 23, 2026. The film’s holiday release coincides with Shrek’s 25th anniversary, positioning it as a major event for the franchise.
Since its debut in 2001, Shrek has become one of the most successful animated franchises in history, grossing over $2.9 billion worldwide. The original film, which redefined animated storytelling with its satirical take on classic fairy tales, won the first-ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
Beyond the main films, the franchise expanded with two Puss in Boots spinoffs, including Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022), which received widespread acclaim. Eddie Murphy has also teased the possibility of a Donkey spinoff, stating, “Donkey deserves his own movie. He’s hilarious and has so much more to offer.”
Originally scheduled for July 1, 2026, Shrek 5 has been rescheduled to December 23, 2026, allowing Universal to move Minions 3 into the summer release slot. Directed by Pierre Coffin, Minions 3 has been shifted up from its previous June 30, 2027 release date. Additionally, Universal has secured June 30, 2027, for an untitled Illumination project, reinforcing its commitment to a strong animated slate.
As Shrek 5 prepares to bring audiences back to the world of Far Far Away, it aims to honor the legacy of a franchise that continues to resonate with multiple generations. With its blend of humor, heart, and satire, the upcoming installment is set to introduce new characters while celebrating the iconic trio of Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey.
