Silent Partner, the directorial debut of cinematographer Eric Branco, will have its world premiere Thursday, October 15, at the 30th annual Urbanworld Film Festival in New York City. The social justice legal thriller stars Roderick Lawrence, Susan Heyward, Jeff Perry, Eric Nelsen, and Shoshana Bean, and was backed by the Film 4 Good Fund.
The film follows Silas Jones, a defense attorney on the verge of making partner at a prestigious firm, after he’s assigned to defend a white woman who fatally shot a Black teenager under the state’s stand-your-ground law. The case pulls Silas into a moral and professional reckoning that strains both his career and his marriage to his wife, Kosi, played by Heyward. Branco, known for his cinematography on the Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning Clemency, The 40-Year-Old Version, and Chasing Summer, co-wrote the script with Lawrence and playwright James J. Johnson, expanding the project from their 2021 short film of the same name. Black Man Films, the Harlem-based production company behind the project, chose to premiere in New York specifically because the film was shot and set there.
The project also reflects a funding gap that often determines which stories about race and the justice system actually reach screens. Film 4 Good Fund specializes in final-stage financing for independent films already in production but lacking the resources to complete post-production, a structural problem that disproportionately affects projects tackling complex social and racial themes without simplifying them for broader commercial appeal. Fund founder Kareem Alston-Rosales described the investment as backing filmmakers willing to trust audiences with nuance rather than flattened narratives, a model built specifically to fill the space traditional studio financing frequently leaves empty.
The ensemble also includes Karen Aldridge, Welker White, Stephen Hill, Isabella Pisacane, Haskiri Velazquez, and Pamela Mitchell. Tickets for the Regal Union Square screening are $30, with a moderated Q&A to follow.
Founded in 1997 by Stacy Spikes, Urbanworld bills itself as the largest internationally competitive festival of its kind, dedicated to BIPOC and multicultural stories across narrative features, documentaries, shorts, and screenplay readings. The 30th anniversary edition runs October 14–18 at Regal Union Square and includes a new “UrbanworldAI” initiative in partnership with The New School, pairing AI-generated short films with panels and tech demonstrations. This year’s broader lineup includes Children of Blood and Bone, Tulsa King, 93′ Til, Liz Here Now, and Love Home + Becoming, placing Silent Partner alongside a slate spanning franchise adaptations, television tie-ins, and smaller independent features.
With Silent Partner currently positioned for a single festival premiere rather than a confirmed wider release, the next question is whether the film finds a distributor willing to carry its difficult subject matter beyond Urbanworld’s audience.
