In 1992 Sister Act was released. Emile Ardolino directed the film from a script by Paul Rudnick. Whoopi Goldberg starred as a lounge singer who was forced to join a convent after being placed in a witness protection program. After grossing over $200 million worldwide, the film spawned a franchise, which consists of the 1993 sequel Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit and a musical adaptation, which premiered in 2006.
Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, while it is a sequel, is loosely based on the life of Crenshaw High School choir instructor Iris Stevenson. Bill Duke directed the widely successful sequel. One that many may argue is better than the original.
