Netflix dropped a lengthy trailer today, providing a glimpse into their impressive lineup for 2024. Among the highlights was a sneak peek of Tyler Perry’s upcoming film, ‘Six Triple Eight,’ a drama set against the backdrop of World War II.
While the streaming giant has yet to announce the official release date, the teaser offers an enticing preview of the completed project, set to hit screens later this year.
Six Triple Eight stars Kerry Washington, Oprah Winfrey, Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Kylie Jefferson, Sarah Jeffery, Pepi Sonuga, Shanice Shantay, Jay Reeves, Jeanté Godlock, Moriah Brown, Baadja-Lyne Odums, Gregg Sulkin, Dean Norris, Susan Sarandon, and Sam Waterston. The film narrates the inspiring true story of the 6888th battalion, the only all-Black, all-female battalion during WWII.
Tyler Perry, who wrote, directed, and produced the Netflix drama, sheds light on the remarkable journey of 855 women thrust into a monumental mission: sorting through a three-year backlog of undelivered mail. Despite facing discrimination, navigating unfamiliar terrain, and operating in a war-torn country, these resilient women not only succeeded but accomplished the Herculean task in half the allocated time.
With a motto they coined themselves – “No Mail, Low Morale” – the 6888th battalion delivered more than just mail; they delivered hope to American soldiers by reconnecting them with their families and loved ones.
The film draws inspiration from Kevin M. Hymel’s article about the 6888th battalion, published in WWII History Magazine by Sovereign Media. A previously overlooked chapter in history, the women of the 6888th recently received the Congressional Gold Medal, Congress’ highest honor, signed into effect by President Joe Biden on March 14, 2022.
Tyler Perry, in an earlier interview with Variety, hinted at the project, expressing his desire to spotlight “some incredible people that were overlooked for years.” Kerry Washington, alongside Nicole Avant, is executive producing for Her Excellency Productions, with Keri Selig (Intuition Productions), Carlota Espinosa, Angi Bones, and Tony Strickland (Tyler Perry Studios) on board. Peter Guber of Mandalay Pictures serves as an executive producer.
