Lucasfilm has just released the first trailer for ‘Skeleton Crew,’ the upcoming Star Wars series set to debut on Disney+ on December 3. The trailer has sparked excitement, but all we’re wondering is, which character is Jaleel White portraying? Is he even seen in the trailer.
White, best known for his role as Steve Urkel on the beloved sitcom ‘Family Matters,’ revealed in a 2023 interview with ComicBook that he would be joining the Star Wars universe. During a chat on Sportsnet’s ‘Hockey Night in Canada,’ White said, “I’m actually gonna be in a new series on Disney+ starring Jude Law, called ‘Skeleton Crew.’ So that’s a big change for me, man! I had to do two hours of makeup every day — I get to play a pirate.”

While White confirmed his role as a pirate, the trailer doesn’t make it clear exactly which pirate he’s playing. And our anticipation is building as we try to guess how his character will fit into the series, which follows a group of young kids on an intergalactic adventure.
At the D23 Expo, the first trailer and key art were unveiled, introducing the show’s main characters: Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), KB (Kyriana Kratter), Neel (Robert Timothy Smith), and the mysterious Jod Na Nawood, played by Jude Law. Law’s character is described as a force user the kids encounter in a prison, but whether he’s aligned with the light or dark side remains a mystery.
Ahead of unveiling the first-look trailer, Law billed the new series as “a timeless adventure story in the spirit of the Amblin coming-of-age films from the ’80s,” mentioning 1985’s “The Goonies” and “E.T.” from 1982 as examples.
The trailer also hints at the series’ homage to 1980s suburban Americana, featuring scenes of the kids in school and in a peaceful residential district before they’re thrust into the chaos of the Star Wars universe.
Joining Law and the young cast are Tunde Adebimpe and Kerry Condon in undisclosed roles, and Nick Frost voices the droid SM-33, the decrepit first mate of the Onyx Cinder. The series is set in the early days of the New Republic, overlapping with the timeline of ‘The Mandalorian.’ The trailer also teases a connection to that show through the appearance of space pirate Vane, played by Marti Matulis.
‘Skeleton Crew’ was created by Jon Watts, the director behind the recent Spider-Man trilogy, alongside his collaborator Christopher Ford. The series boasts an impressive lineup of directors, including David Lowery (‘The Green Knight’), the Daniels (‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’), and Lee Isaac Chung (‘Twisters’).
With its first trailer, ‘Skeleton Crew’ adds to Lucasfilm and Disney’s ongoing effort to explore new corners of the Star Wars universe beyond the Skywalker saga. As the release date approaches, one mystery remains: which pirate in the galaxy far, far away will Jaleel White bring to life
