At Disney’s D23 event, fans were treated to an extended look at ‘Mufasa: The Lion King,’ the prequel to the 2019 photorealistic remake. The new trailer, which served as the grand finale of Disney’s three-hour presentation, delves into the early life of Mufasa and Taka/Scar, showcasing how their relationship transforms from brotherhood to bitter rivalry.
Before revealing the footage, the stage was set by a performance of the film’s opening song, after which director Barry Jenkins took the spotlight. “Like all of you, ‘The Lion King’ made an indelible mark on me,” Jenkins shared. “Hearing the music and feeling every emotion as the story unfolded, a father bestowing a legacy upon his son, a pride being built anew, and a young lion rising to his destiny. Telling his story is an absolute honor.”
In a surprise announcement, Jenkins revealed that Lin-Manuel Miranda will be penning the original songs for the film. Miranda received a standing ovation as he joined Jenkins on stage to introduce one of the new songs, ‘I Always Wanted a Brother,’ which underscores the relationship between young Mufasa and Scar.
The film, directed by Jenkins, explores the origin story of Mufasa, charting his journey from orphaned cub to the revered ruler of Pride Rock. Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. lead the voice cast as the young Mufasa and Taka/Scar, respectively. Beyoncé returns to voice Nala, while her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, will debut as Kiara.
New cast members include Tiffany Boone as Sarabi, Kagiso Lediga as young Rafiki, Preston Nyman as Zazu, and Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros, a formidable lion with big plans for his pride. Thandiwe Newton and Lennie James also join as Taka’s parents, Eshe and Obasi; with Anika Noni Rose and Keith David voicing Mufasa’s parents, Afia and Masego.
Additional casting includes Braelyn Rankins, Theo Somolu, Folake Olowofoyeku, Joanna Jones, Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Atim, Abdul Salis and Dominique Jennings.
Miranda expressed his enthusiasm for the project, saying, “The Lion King has an incredible musical legacy with music from some of the greatest songwriters around, and I’m humbled and proud to be a part of it. It’s been a joy working alongside Barry Jenkins to bring Mufasa’s story to life.”
‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ is set to be the centerpiece holiday film of the year, roaring into theaters on December 20.
