‘Snowfall’ Spinoff at FX Adds Asante Blackk, Peyton Alex Smith, and Simmie Sims III to Cast

FX’s upcoming Snowfall spinoff is expanding its cast, with Asante Blackk, Peyton Alex Smith, and Simmie Sims III—better known to music fans as Buddy—joining the pilot. The trio will star alongside previously announced leads and Snowfall alums Gail Bean and Isaiah John, reprising their roles as Wanda and Leon, respectively.

Set in the Rise of ‘90s West Coast Rap

The new project is set in early 1990s Los Angeles, picking up after the events of Snowfall’s six-season run. According to the official logline, the story follows a recovering addict (Bean) who sets her sights on bringing West Coast rap to the mainstream—while navigating the dangers of a looming gang war and internal conflicts within her community.

Malcolm Spellman (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Empire) is penning the pilot and executive producing. He’s joined by a team of Snowfall vets including Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, Julie DeJoie, Michael London, and Trevor Engelson. FX Productions is producing.

Character details for Blackk, Smith, and Sims are being kept tightly under wraps, but their casting brings a fresh energy to a series poised to tackle the collision of music, trauma, and survival in post-crack epidemic Los Angeles.

The Legacy of Snowfall

Created by the late John Singleton alongside Eric Amadio and Dave Andron, Snowfall debuted in 2017 and became one of FX’s most acclaimed dramas. Set during the early years of the crack cocaine epidemic, the series centered on Franklin Saint (Damson Idris), a young drug kingpin, and intertwined his rise with that of CIA operatives, cartel members, and street families torn apart by addiction and ambition. It concluded in 2023 after six seasons, with Wanda and Leon’s storyline serving as a grounding moral compass in its final arc.

Meet the New Faces

  • Asante Blackk broke through with his Emmy-nominated role in Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us. He later starred in This Is Us as Malik Hodges and will appear in the upcoming season of Euphoria. His film credits include Story Ave and Landscape with Invisible Hand.
  • Peyton Alex Smith is no stranger to franchise storytelling. He led All American: Homecoming and appeared in Legacies and BMF, with additional credits including BET’s The Quad and Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit.
  • Simmie Sims III, known musically as Buddy, brings an authentic voice from the LA music scene. A protégé of Pharrell Williams, Sims has worked with Kendrick Lamar, Nipsey Hussle, and Chance the Rapper. His acting credits include Rap Sh!t and Bel-Air, blending his artistry across mediums.

FX has not yet announced a premiere date or title for the spinoff, but with its blend of returning faces and new talent, the series is shaping up to carry Snowfall’s legacy into a new era—one shaped by beats, bars, and the battles behind the music.
