Production is officially underway on Discretion, the eight-episode legal thriller from Chandler Baker and A24 at Paramount+, with Stephan James and Colton Ryan joining the previously announced cast as series regulars. They join Nicole Kidman, Elle Fanning and Josh Lucas in the series set to launch globally on Paramount+ in 2027.
James will play Logan, a sharp corporate associate who becomes a mentor to Lenny. Ryan will play Boone, Lenny’s ex-boyfriend, a recovering addict from an affluent Dallas family who is nine months sober and living at a halfway house while quietly trying to rebuild his life. The casting marks a reunion for Fanning and Ryan, who previously starred together in the Hulu limited series The Girl From Plainville.
Discretion follows summer associate Lenny, played by Fanning, at a prestigious Dallas law firm who uncovers a web of NDAs masking a dark truth. When she realizes she signed the same agreement, her discoveries put her in the crosshairs of the firm’s most powerful female partner Sharon, played by Kidman, upending their mentor-protégé dynamic and raising the question: who gets to keep secrets, and at what cost.
James, a Golden Globe and Emmy nominee, will next be seen portraying Carl Weathers in I Play Rocky, which premieres at TIFF next month. He is best known for his work in Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk and the Prime Video thriller series Homecoming.
The series is written and executive produced by New York Times bestselling author Chandler Baker, known for Whisper Network and The Husbands, alongside executive producer Susannah Grant, known for Erin Brockovich and Unbelievable. Matt Shakman executive produces and directs the first four episodes. Kidman and Per Saari executive produce via Blossom Films, while Fanning, Dakota Fanning and Brittany Kahan Ward executive produce via Lewellen Pictures. Jordan Cerf and Joe Hipps also executive produce alongside A24.
Discretion launches globally on Paramount+ in 2027.
