Stephen Curry is preparing to head to Paris for the Olympics, but he’s also making his way to Peacock for his first scripted television role. The streaming service has unveiled the first trailer for ‘Mr. Throwback,’ a six-episode mockumentary series featuring the Golden State Warriors point guard playing himself. Curry reunites with his down-on-his-luck middle school teammate, portrayed by Adam Pally.
Joining Curry and Pally in the cast are Ego Nwodim and Ayden Mayeri, with Layla Scalisi, Tien Tran, Tracy Letts, and Rich Sommer making recurring guest appearances. The series is directed by David Wain.
“I was excited to step into the world of scripted comedy with ‘Mr. Throwback,’ a story with love for family and friends at its center,” Curry said in a statement. The athlete shared the trailer on his social media channels Wednesday morning. “I’m looking forward to viewers seeing me play a version of myself no one has ever seen before and hope they feel connected to the characters and the dilemmas they face throughout the series.”
“I am honored to have joined Adam, Ego, Ayden, and the producing team of David Caspe, Matthew Libman, Daniel Libman, and David Wain to create this series, along with Erick Peyton steering the ship at Unanimous Media,” Curry’s statement concluded. Pally also serves as an executive producer on the show.
‘Mr. Throwback’ is set to premiere on Peacock on August 8. The mockumentary format, popularized by shows like ‘The Office’ and ‘Parks and Recreation,’ continues to thrive on Peacock. This series, produced by Universal Television in association with Curry’s Unanimous Media, marks the first project under Curry’s global talent partnership with NBCUniversal.
Curry’s transition from behind the camera to a central on-screen role is significant. He launched Unanimous Media in 2018, which produced ABC’s game show ‘Holey Moley’ and Apple’s docuseries ‘Underrated.’ Adam Pally, known for his roles in ‘Happy Endings’ and the upcoming live-action/animated Sonic spinoff ‘Knuckles,’ adds to the star-studded cast.
With David Caspe, the creator of ‘Happy Endings,’ and writing duo Matthew and Daniel Libman on board, ‘Mr. Throwback’ is a unique blend of humor, sports, and redemption.
