Sterling K. Brown has joined Tom Hanks and Callum Turner in The Comebacker, Sony Pictures’ upcoming baseball drama directed by Marielle Heller, The Hollywood Reporter reports exclusively. Brown will play the team’s manager, joining a cast that also includes Patricia Clarkson and Amy Madigan. The film is set for theatrical release July 30, 2027.

Heller wrote the script for the adaptation, based on a short story by Dave Eggers from his collection The Forgetters. The film follows the relationship between a Mets pitching coach, played by Hanks, and his pitcher, played by Turner, after the young player is struck by a line drive while on the mound, an incident known in baseball as a “comebacker.” The project previously drew a competitive bidding war among Republic Pictures, Focus Features, and Sony before landing at the latter, reuniting Hanks with Heller for the first time since A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

Brown’s casting continues a run that’s kept him moving fluidly between major studio ensembles and character-driven leads. He currently stars in and executive produces Hulu’s Paradise, recently renewed for a third season, and earned a Best Supporting Oscar nomination for American Fiction. Rather than slotting into a singular lane, his 2026 alone spans a ruthless-father role in Amazon MGM’s Is God Is, an upcoming lead opposite Natalie Portman in The Gallerist, and a role in Amazon MGM’s live-action Voltron, placing him across awards-conscious drama, studio genre work, and franchise filmmaking within the same calendar year. That range reflects a broader industry shift in which Black actors with awards pedigree are increasingly cast across every register of major studio output, rather than being confined to a narrower set of “prestige” roles.

Gary Goetzman produces through Playtone alongside Heller’s producing partner Leah Holzer through Defiant By Nature, with Working Barn and Charles Miller executive producing. Hanks previously starred in two other Eggers adaptations, A Hologram for the King and The Circle, making The Comebacker his third collaboration with the author’s work. Super Bowl halftime performer Bad Bunny and Oscar nominee Colman Domingo are reportedly also circling roles in the film.

With a stacked cast now in place and production details still coming together, the next thing to watch is whether Bad Bunny and Domingo’s rumored involvement firms up before filming begins.
