Steven Caple Jr. to Direct ‘I Am Legend 2,’ Reuniting With Michael B. Jordan as Will Smith Returns

Nearly two decades after I Am Legend first redefined post-apocalyptic sci-fi, Warner Bros. is officially moving forward with its long-rumored sequel—and it’s assembling a major creative team to do it.

According to Collider, filmmaker Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) is officially developing I Am Legend 2 for the studio. The update comes after Caple Jr. confirmed his involvement during press interviews for Netflix’s Man on Fire remake, where he revealed he is actively working on the project alongside other studio commitments.

Will Smith will reprise his role for the sequel, starring opposite Michael B. Jordan. The sequel will reunite Caple Jr. with Jordan, who worked on Creed II together.

A New Chapter for ‘I Am Legend’

Originally released in 2007 and directed by Francis Lawrence, I Am Legend starred Will Smith as Dr. Robert Neville, a virologist believed to be the last human survivor in a virus-ravaged New York City. The film became a box office success and a cultural touchpoint for its haunting depiction of isolation and survival.

Now, I Am Legend 2 is moving forward with a major narrative shift: the sequel will treat the film’s original alternate ending as canon—meaning Neville survived.

That alternate ending, long considered closer to Richard Matheson’s original 1954 novel, reframes the infected not as mindless monsters, but as intelligent beings defending their own existence—positioning Neville as the real threat in their world.

Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan Lead the Next Era

Will Smith will reprise his role as Robert Neville, while Michael B. Jordan will portray a new character tied to a surviving human settlement reportedly based in Connecticut—not Neville’s son, as previously speculated.

Smith has previously teased the project, noting that early discussions include strong narrative ideas and a shared creative vision with Jordan.

Oscar-winning writer Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the original film, is also attached to pen the script, which is reportedly set decades after the first film’s events.

A Post-Apocalyptic World Reimagined

Early story details suggest the sequel will explore a world where nature has reclaimed urban spaces, with a tone and structure potentially inspired by The Last of Us. Goldsman has hinted at a deeper exploration of humanity’s place after collapse, and a more faithful connection to Matheson’s original themes.

While no official release date has been announced, I Am Legend 2 is now firmly in active development at Warner Bros.
