Meet Mavis Beaumont and her friends in Survival of the Thickest trailer which Netflix just released ahead of its global premiere on July 13, 2023.
Survival of the Thickest follows the journey of Mavis Beaumont, portrayed by the talented Michelle Buteau. Mavis, a black, plus-size woman unexpectedly thrust into the single life, must rebuild her world as a struggling stylist. With the support of her chosen family, a body-positive attitude, and her trusty v-neck and lip gloss, she’s determined not only to survive but thrive. This scripted comedy series is based on Buteau’s acclaimed book of essays.
Joining Michelle Buteau are series regulars include Tone Bell, Christine Horn, Tasha Smith. While the guest stars include Annisa Felix, Allan K. Washington, Ambre Anderson, Anna George, Anthony Michael Lopez, Becca Blackwell, Christine Jones, Garcelle Beauvais, Hugh Moore, J. Riley Jr., Mark McKinnon, and Marouane Zotti.
In the series, Garcelle Beauvais portrays Natasha, Anissa Felix plays India, Peppermint embodies a character with the same name, Taylor Selé brings Jacque to life, and Marouane Zotti takes on the role of Luca.
Additionally, Tone Bell portrays Khalil, Mavis’s best friend and confidant since high school. Khalil is a creative and talented artist who prides himself on keeping life simple and uncomplicated, but as he reaches his late 30s, he starts questioning the true meaning of life and if it’s worth complicating for the right person.
Tasha Smith joins the cast as Marley, a self-made millionaire in her early 50s. With her NYC status, impeccable manicures, and top-of-the-line serums, Marley exudes Aries energy and acts as a warm big sister figure. Her desire is to see the best in everyone and guide them toward their potential.
The first two episodes of the eight episode series are directed by Linda Mendoza. The series, based on Michelle Buteau’s book, was created by Buteau and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel. Sanchez-Witzel also serves as the showrunner, with executive production from Ravi Nandan and Alli Reich for A24, Anne Hong, and Mosaic (Michelle’s manager).
As the release date approaches, anticipation grows for this heartfelt and humorous comedy series that celebrates resilience and self-acceptance. Prepare for laughter and inspiration when Survival of the Thickest debuts on Netflix this July.
