Susan Kelechi Watson and Sterling K. Brown are reuniting, this time not on screen but as producer and co-producer of Pre-Existing Condition, the acclaimed Off-Broadway play returning for a limited engagement at the Greenwich House Theater beginning September 1 and running through October 25.
Written by Tony Award nominee Marin Ireland and directed by Tony Award nominee Maria Dizzia, the play centers on an unnamed woman navigating the quiet challenges and everyday indignities of moving forward after a life-altering relationship. The production, described as an unfiltered examination of how violence imprints itself on the body and soul, originally enjoyed a sold-out run at the Connelly Theater in summer 2024 before returning this fall with a starry new ensemble.
The central role of A will be played by a rotating cast of formidable actresses across the run. Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o opens the engagement from September 1 through September 26, followed by Tony and Emmy nominee Phillipa Soo from September 28 through October 17, Susannah Flood from October 18 through October 24, with Hari Nef and Edie Falco’s dates to be announced. The supporting cast includes Drama Desk Award nominee Greg Keller, Pulitzer Prize finalist Dael Orlandersmith and Drama Desk winner Sarah Steele, all reprising their roles from the original production.
“We have assembled a dazzling group of women to add to the legacy of our first production,” Ireland and Dizzia said in a joint statement. “Actors sharing the role creates a community inside this production, and we can’t wait for that community to expand to audiences in September.”
The production is produced by Jessica Chase and Watson, with co-producers Brown, Jesse Eisenberg, Joshua Berg Creative, KingSimmo Productions LLC and Charlie Kaufman among others. A percentage of proceeds will benefit Sanctuary for Families Survivor Leadership Fund.
