Tank and Fantasia Barrino Try to Save Their Marriage and Church in ‘Tyler Perry’s The Gospel of Christmas’ [First Look]

Netflix has released the first look at Tyler Perry’s The Gospel of Christmas, a holiday drama starring Fantasia Barrino Taylor and Durrell “Tank” Babbs, premiering November 11. Written and directed by Perry, the film follows a struggling pastor who inherits his family’s church in a troubled New York neighborhood and must fight to save it, his marriage, and his faith all at once.

Tank plays Isaac Jefferson, the pastor, with Fantasia starring as his wife, Rebecca, whose own faith becomes a steadying force as Isaac struggles to hold everything together. For both leads, the roles carry personal weight beyond the script. Fantasia, who has called Perry a mentor since early in her career, said she immediately connected the project to her late grandmother, whose birthday fell on December 25. Tank’s relationship with Perry dates back nearly two decades to 2006, and he said Perry’s script ended up mirroring his own upbringing in the church so closely that he had to point it out directly: “He didn’t realize that he was writing exactly who I am versus just writing a story.”

The film’s ensemble reads like a roll call of gospel music royalty: CeCe Winans, Shirley Caesar, Yolanda Adams, Fred Hammond, Smokie Norful, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Hezekiah Walker, Chanté Moore, Jekalyn Carr, Ann Nesby, Le’Andria Johnson, and The Clark Sisters, with Kirk Franklin serving as music producer. For a holiday film built specifically around the Black church experience, assembling this many gospel legends in a single cast goes beyond casting choice, it functions as its own form of testimony, putting real spiritual and musical lineage directly into a story about faith under pressure. Both leads described the experience as overwhelming in the best sense; Tank said arriving at the first table read and realizing he was surrounded by his musical heroes was “one of the happiest days of my life,” while Fantasia, who began singing gospel at age five, said she stayed “on a natural high” throughout filming, moved by the collective anointing of the artists around her.

Perry told Netflix’s Tudum that the project started with the songs that got him through difficult periods in his own life, and that assembling the cast’s musical talent was a deliberate choice: “If you know gospel, you know these people, and if you don’t know gospel, just wait until you see this movie.” The Gospel of Christmas is produced by Perry alongside Angi Bones and Tony L. Strickland, and arrives as part of a packed Tyler Perry Studios slate heading to Netflix, including ‘Tis So Sweet, Why Did I Get Married Again?, Beauty in Black Season 2 Part 2, and Joe’s College Road Trip.

With this level of gospel star power built into a single film and Perry continuing an unusually prolific run on Netflix, The Gospel of Christmas is positioning itself as one of the platform’s most distinctive holiday releases this year.
