Teen Witch Drama ‘Coven Academy’ Renewed for Season 2 at Disney+/Hulu

Coven Academy has been renewed for a second season at Disney+/Hulu, roughly three weeks after the supernatural teen drama’s Season 1 premiere. The first season logged 20.3 million global hours watched on Disney+ and Hulu in its first three weeks, with an additional 30 million-plus views after its first chapter was released separately on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.

According to Nielsen, Coven Academy was the No. 1 streaming series among teens ages 12 to 17 over its premiere weekend and landed in the top five among all viewers by total views. Co-viewing was notably strong, with half of viewers ages 12 to 17 and nearly two-thirds of viewers ages 6 to 11 watching alongside an adult.

Set at Crescent Veil Academy, a New Orleans boarding school for young witches and warlocks, Season 1 followed new student Briar, played by Malina Pauli Weissman, as she formed a powerful bond with her coven, mind-controlling Sasha, played by Jordan Leftwich, and time-bending Tegan, played by Ora Duplass, while investigating her mother’s murder and navigating a romance with brooding vampire Ollie, played by Louis Thresher. The season ended with several major reveals: headmistress Miss Graves, played by Tiffani Thiessen, confirmed as Briar’s biological mother; Sasha’s presumed-dead brother Mason, played by Nathaniel Logan McIntyre, revealed alive as a vampire; Jake’s sister McKenna in the process of transitioning after being bitten; and a mysterious dark cloud forming over the school, hinting at what’s still to come.

Creator Tim Federle told Variety he’s interested in exploring what makes a mother-daughter bond genuinely dangerous once reunited, and who that danger threatens most, a clear nod to Briar and Miss Graves’s relationship heading into Season 2. Speaking with TVLine, Federle said Briar will likely confront Miss Graves directly about the circumstances of her birth and being given up, Ollie will probably return home to come out to his family as a vampire, and Tegan will remain by McKenna’s side, with Federle specifically noting he wants to stay mindful of avoiding familiar queer tragedy tropes in how that story unfolds.

Federle executive produces alongside Darren Swimmer, Todd Slavkin, Amanda Row, Bronwyn North-Reist, and Kimberly McCullough, with the series produced by Federle’s Chorus Boy Productions in association with Disney Kids & Family. Season 1’s 21 episodes are available on Disney+, Hulu, and Freeform.

With several major character arcs already mapped out and a creator openly discussing how he wants to avoid genre clichés going into Season 2, Coven Academy enters its next chapter with a clearer sense of direction than most freshman renewals typically have this early.
