Tessa Thompson’s Viva Maude Secures Multiyear First-Look Film Deal with Amazon MGM Studios

Tessa Thompson and her production company, Viva Maude, have closed a multiyear first-look film deal with Amazon MGM Studios. The deal solidifies their collaboration on various projects, including the upcoming film “Hedda,” a reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s renowned 1891 stage play, directed by Nia DaCosta and starring Thompson in the lead role.

Viva Maude, founded by Thompson in 2020, has a mission “to influence culture through projects that defy categorization and are manifestly entertaining,” as stated in the official press release. The production company has already been working with Amazon MGM Studios, specifically under its Orion Pictures banner, on the ambitious project “Hedda.” The film is currently in production, promising an epic and visceral reinterpretation of the classic play.

The multiyear deal follows a successful partnership between Viva Maude and Amazon MGM Studios, with the latter expressing enthusiasm for formalizing their relationship. Julie Rapaport, Head of Film Creative and Strategy at Amazon MGM Studios, and Alana Mayo, Head of Orion Pictures, praised Thompson as “a true force and an extraordinarily talented actor and producer.” They emphasized their commitment to developing inclusive and impactful stories that uplift, inspire, and entertain.

Tessa Thompson, known for her roles in films like “Creed III” and “Sylvie’s Love,” expressed her excitement about the collaboration. In her statement, she highlighted the purpose behind founding Viva Maude: “to create more room for collaborators to think boldly, for artists to grow in new ways, and for dreaming bigger in what a production company can achieve.” Thompson credited Amazon MGM/Orion Pictures as true partners in creating ambitious work.

Viva Maude’s portfolio includes over 20 movies and TV projects across various genres, including narrative, documentary, and unscripted content. Notable projects in the pipeline include “The Secret Lives of Church Ladies” at Max and an adaptation of “Luster” for HBO. The production company has been expanding its reach, with Kishori Rajan, known for her work on “Random Acts of Flyness,” joining in 2021 as Senior VP of Development & Production.

The multiyear deal with Amazon MGM Studios positions Viva Maude as a key player in shaping the future of diverse and impactful storytelling in Hollywood.
