Get First Look at Andre Holland as Huey P Newton in Apple TV+’s ‘The Big Cigar’

Apple TV+ has released a first look at “The Big Cigar,” an upcoming limited series featuring André Holland as Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton. The six-episode drama, set to debut globally on May 17, will kick off with two episodes followed by weekly releases until June 14, exclusively on Apple TV+.

Based on a Playboy magazine article by Joshuah Bearman, the series follows Newton’s escape to Cuba with the help of producer Bert Schneider. “The Big Cigar” is executive produced by Janine Sherman Barrois, Jim Hecht, Bearman, and Don Cheadle with Cheadle directing the first two episodes.

The ensemble cast includes Alessandro Nivola, Tiffany Boone, PJ Byrne, Marc Menchaca, Moses Ingram, Rebecca Dalton, Olli Haaskivi, Jordane Christie, and Glynn Turman. Barrois serves as showrunner, with Hecht penning the premiere episode.

The official synopsis reads: “The Big Cigar” tells the extraordinary, hilarious, almost-too-good-to-be-true story of how Newton relied on his best friend, Bert Schneider, the Hollywood producer behind “Easy Rider,” to elude a nationwide manhunt and escape to Cuba while being pursued into exile by the FBI.

Newton, a co-founder of the Black Panther Party, aimed to combat police brutality and empower the Black community. Despite legal issues and controversy, his legacy remains significant in the civil rights movement.

“The Big Cigar” offers a gripping portrayal of Newton’s daring escape, highlighting his impact on history. Don’t miss the premiere on May 17, exclusively on Apple TV+.
