After much anticipation, ‘The Book of Clarence’ teaser trailer is out. The film is led by LaKeith Stanfield in the title role. It’s written and directed by Jeymes Samuel and reunites him with ‘The Harder They Fall’ cast Stanfield and RJ Cyler. As well as ‘The Harder They Fall’ collaborater Jay Z who is attached to produce ‘The Book of Clarence.’

Set against the backdrop of 33 A.D., The Book of Clarence centers around its title character (Stanfield), a man inspired to become the next Messiah for personal gain. But his journey turns out to be a bigger exploration of faith and loyalty than he could have imagined. According to Variety, the film is expected to detail how “Clarence may be full of doubt about the Messiah in the beginning,” but “he’s forced to find his faith as the story moves on”

The Book of Clarence, which will hit theaters January 12, 2024, also stars David Oyelowo, Teyana Taylor and Alfre Woodard as real-life biblical figures.

Omar Sy, Benedict Cumberbatch, James McAvoy, Anna Diop, Babs Olusanmokun, Caleb McLoughlin, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Nicholas Pinnock, Eric Kofi-Abrefa, Micheal Ward, Chase Dillon, Tom Glynn-Carney, and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor round out the cast.

The trailer which dropped exclusively through Ebony Magazine gives a glimpse into LaKeith Stanfield’s portrayal of Clarence as he attempts to become one of the Messiah’s apostles. Enthralled by the status of the 12 apostles, Clarence makes it his mission to join their forces. Though the film does incorporate the use of biblical characters like Jesus, Mary Magdalene and John the Baptist, Samuel told Vanity Fair the story would “tell a Bible story about an everyman.”

James Lassiter, Tendo Nagenda and Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter serve as producers. Garrett Grant is an executive producer. Watch the trailer below.
