The Diplomat is returning for a fifth season at Netflix, with the renewal arriving two weeks after the political thriller’s fourth season premiered and left viewers with a major cliffhanger.
The series, created by Debora Cahn, stars Keri Russell as Kate Wyler, a U.S. ambassador whose diplomatic responsibilities are complicated by her marriage to Vice President Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) and the political power struggles unfolding inside the White House. The series also stars Ato Essandoh as Stuart Hayford, Ali Ahn as Eidra Park, and Nana Mensah as White House Chief of Staff Billie Appiah.
Season 4 put Kate in the middle of an escalating crisis involving President Grace Penn (Allison Janney), her husband Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford), and a conspiracy involving Russia’s most powerful weapon. As Kate worked to manage the fallout of an assassination attempt against the U.S. president on British soil, tensions threatened both her marriage and the fragile relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom.
The season ended with Kate making a dramatic move during a G7 meeting in Italy, resigning from her post before Hal followed her lead. Their decisions leave the political landscape in flux heading into Season 5. Jodie Whittaker joined the cast in Season 4 as British Prime Minister Bethan Vaughn, following Rory Kinnear’s departure from the role of former Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge. David Gyasi’s Austin Dennison, the British foreign secretary, was killed off during the fourth season.
Since its 2023 debut, The Diplomat has become a major Netflix drama, earning multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. For Season 3, Russell won the Actor Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series, while Janney earned an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
Netflix has not yet announced a premiere date or additional plot details for Season 5.
