HBO has released the official trailer for The Gilded Age Season 4, following an earlier teaser, confirming new story details ahead of the show’s November 1 premiere. The new footage reveals that Peggy and William’s engagement is being threatened by tension between their individual professional ambitions, that the van Rhijn household is preparing for a visit from President Grover Cleveland, and that Bertha is working to repair her strained marriage to George after the fallout from her social maneuvering.
The season’s official logline sets the stakes directly: Bertha Russell changed society at a cost, and her family must now reckon with the consequences. Agnes van Rhijn seizes an opportunity to reclaim her position, Marian charts a new path for herself, and Peggy works to earn acceptance from her future in-laws. Created by Julian Fellowes, the eight-episode season is a co-production between HBO and Universal Television, directed and executive produced by Salli Richardson-Whitfield alongside Sonja Warfield, Gareth Neame, David Crockett, Bob Greenblatt, Kate Churchill, Davita Scarlett, and Elaine Aronson.
The trailer also arrives alongside the previously announced addition of Tony winner Adrienne Warren to the cast, joining new arrivals Dennis Haysbert, Taylor Trensch, James Scully, Maggie Kuntz, Neal Huff, Bonnie Milligan, Jim Gaffigan, Dallas Roberts, Andrew Burnap, and Elizabeth Marvel. For a series built around Gilded Age New York high society, a world the historical record and most prior adaptations have depicted almost exclusively through a white lens, the show’s inclusion of actors like Warren, Haysbert, John Douglas Thompson, Denée Benton, Audra McDonald, and Phylicia Rashad in substantial roles continues a pattern the series has carried since its first season of writing Black characters into both the domestic and social fabric of that era rather than keeping them at the margins.
The cast’s expansion ties directly into a separate announcement: the ensemble recently came together for Voices of the Gilded Age: The Christmas Album, a new holiday collection featuring performances from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Christine Baranski, Audra McDonald, Donna Murphy, Kelli O’Hara, Adrienne Warren, Denée Benton, Jordan Donica, and others, alongside an original song written by Desmond Child.
With the full trailer now out and the Christmas album already building anticipation around the ensemble’s chemistry off-screen, the real question heading into November is how much of Season 4’s drama centers on the Russells’ social reckoning versus the quieter personal stakes building for characters like Peggy and Marian.
