Oprah, Halle Berry, Sheryl Lee Ralph and More Celebrate Essence Magazine in Time of Essence Magazine

The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) has unveiled the official trailer for its highly anticipated original documentary series, “Time of Essence,” which is set to premiere on Friday, August 18 at 9 pm ET/PT. The five-part, one-hour series promises to be a captivating celebration of the iconic magazine that has left an indelible mark on Black culture worldwide for over 50 years.

“Time of Essence” delves into the legacy of ESSENCE, the trailblazing magazine that has captivated a global community of more than 20 million Black women. With its unforgettable covers and influential stories, ESSENCE has consistently defined and shaped cultural narratives throughout the decades. The series unveils the captivating journey through the lens of this cultural powerhouse, showcasing the magazine’s pivotal moments and the voices that have shaped it.

Among the distinguished lineup of thought leaders, celebrities, and culture-defining influencers featured in the series are media mogul Oprah Winfrey, Oscar®-winning actresses Halle Berry and Whoopi Goldberg, Emmy®-winning actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, and renowned figures such as Regina Hall, Taye Diggs, Taraji P. Henson, Gabrielle Union-Wade, Beverly Johnson, Anansa Sims, Vanessa Williams, Sunny Hostin, Suzanne de Passe, Mikki Taylor, Susan L. Taylor, and Caroline Wanga.

In a move to engage fans and extend the celebration, OWN is launching an interactive fan activation campaign across its social media platforms. Fans are invited to utilize the ‘Time of Essence Cover Creator,’ a tool that empowers users to upload their photos and design their personalized ESSENCE magazine covers, which they can share with friends and family. To participate, fans can visit own.tv/essencecover and share their creations using the tags @Essence and @owntv along with the hashtag #OWNTimeofEssence.

The heart of “Time of Essence” lies in its narrative, exploring how ESSENCE has been a driving force in informing and reflecting Black culture in America for more than five decades. Each episode delves into a specific decade, from the vibrant ’70s to the present day. The series provides viewers with firsthand commentary from icons, trailblazers, staff members, and leaders who experienced and defined the cultural shifts of each era. Complementing these insightful interviews are never-before-seen footage and exclusive behind-the-scenes glimpses from the realms of entertainment, sports, politics, fashion, and beauty.

“Time of Essence” is a collaboration between 51 Minds and ESSENCE Studios LLC for OWN. The executive producers include Christian Sarabia and Nicole Elliott for 51 Minds, Raymond Garcia for Major TV, and Emmet Dennis, Sidra Smith, Stephanie “NöNe” Dunivan, and Barkue Tubman-Zawolo for ESSENCE Studios LLC.

With the premiere just around the corner, “Time of Essence” promises to be a remarkable exploration of ESSENCE’s profound impact on Black culture and its continued relevance in today’s society.
