The wait is finally over for Shrek fans. Universal has released the first teaser trailer for Shrek 5, the long-awaited fifth installment in DreamWorks Animation’s franchise, arriving in theaters next summer.
The teaser offers the first look at Shrek and Fiona’s now-grown children as the family sets off on a new adventure alongside the ever-enthusiastic Donkey. True to form, Donkey appears to be the only one fully on board with whatever lies ahead.
Plot details remain under wraps, but the trailer does give audiences one irresistible preview of what’s to come: at some point during the film, the whole crew ends up behind bars, with Donkey doing what Donkey does best and singing his heart out to a captive, if not entirely willing, audience.
Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz return as Shrek, Donkey and Fiona, joined by Zendaya, Marcello Hernandez and Skyler Gisondo as the couple’s three children. The film is directed by franchise veterans Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn, with Brad Ableson co-directing, and produced by Gina Shay and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri.
The original Shrek won the first ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2001, and the four films in the series have earned more than $2.9 billion worldwide combined. Shrek 5 hits theaters next summer.
