Universal Drops Trailer for ‘One Night Only,’ the Rom-Com Where Premarital Sex Is Legal Just Once a Year

Will Gluck’s latest hits theaters August 7

Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for One Night Only, an upcoming romantic comedy directed by Will Gluck, the filmmaker behind Easy A, Friends With Benefits, and the 2023 box office hit Anyone but You.

The film stars Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner as Allie and Owen, two love-starved strangers who cross paths in a lightly fictionalized New York City on the one night of the year when single people are legally allowed to have sex. The supporting cast includes LeVar Burton, Molly Ringwald, Jay Ellis, Okieriete Onaodowan, Este Haim, Ziwe, Maya Hawke, Julia Fox, and King Princess.

Recently dumped Owen and hopeful romantic Allie may be the only two people in the city looking for something more than a fleeting encounter. When they meet, sparks fly, but a string of missteps and side quests keeps pulling them apart as they race toward and away from each other across the city.

The high-concept premise has been described as something like “The Purge, but for single people,” and Gluck, who also rewrote the script based on an original by Travis Braun, is leaning fully into the absurdity. When asked why such a law would even exist in this world, Gluck told Entertainment Weekly simply: “No one remembers.”

One Night Only opens in theaters on August 7.
