Netflix has released the official trailer for The Polygamist, its upcoming South African supernovela, giving audiences their most detailed look yet at the high-stakes world of power, betrayal, and complicated love at the center of the story. The series premieres globally on June 12, 2026.
Adapted from Sue Nyathi’s acclaimed novel and produced by award-winning Stained Glass Productions, the 22-episode series centers on Jonasi Gomora (Sdumo Mtshali), a self-made CEO whose carefully constructed empire and even more carefully constructed personal life begins to collapse under the weight of his own choices. As his relationships with multiple wives and partners collide, secrets and betrayal threaten to dismantle everything he has built.
At the heart of the story is Joyce Gomora (Gugu Gumede), Jonasi’s wife who has devoted herself entirely to her husband and family, projecting an image as pristine and curated as her signature all-white wardrobe. But as the cracks in her marriage widen and Jonasi’s indiscretions can no longer be contained by money, power, or secrecy, Joyce finds herself desperately fighting to save not only her relationship, but the version of stability she spent years building. Her struggle pulls everyone around her deeper into the tension of a home struggling to hold itself together.
Noluthando Shabalala brings fierce emotional depth to Mpume, Joyce’s daughter caught in the family fallout, while rising star Wonder Ndlovu plays her son Menzi, both forced to confront the emotional weight of a family fracturing from within.
The series boasts a heavyweight creative team, with executive producers Gugu Zuma-Ncube, Thuli Zuma, and Pepsi Pokane, and direction from Akin Omotoso, Rolie Nikiwe, and Nthabi Tau. Head writer Busisiwe Zwane leads the writing team, joined by Nontuthuzelo Magoxo, Lorato Phefo, and Nkosazana Zuma-Mncube.
The full ensemble cast includes Kwanele Mthethwa, S’thandiwe Kgoroge, Kenneth Nkosi, Celeste Ntuli, Luyanda Zwane, Vuyo Biyela, Nolwazi Mfeka, and Lwazie Keith Tsebesha alongside leads Mtshali and Gumede.
And the story is far from over. The series has already teased that Part 2 will shift the lens to Jonasi’s side of the story, promising yet another dimension to an already layered narrative.
The Polygamist marks Netflix’s continued investment in African storytelling and serialized local drama, positioning itself as one of the platform’s most ambitious African productions to date.
