Inspired by the life of Tracy McMillan, Unprisoned is a half-hour that centers on Paige Alexander (Washington), a messy yet perfectionist marriage and family therapist. She’s also a single mom to 16-year-old Finn (Rakotohavana) whose life is turned right-side-up when her dad, Edwin Alexander (Lindo), gets out of prison and moves in with her and her son.

Rakotohavana’s Finn is a gamer who is super-logical, low-key but hilarious, sweet, smart and hyper-rational. Finn is open hearted and open-minded toward his grandfather, and their relationship becomes a bridge home for Edwin — and a bridge into the world for Finn.

McIntosh will portray the Little version of Washington’s character Paige. Seven-year-old Little Paige is the personification of grown-up Paige’s Inner Child, she’s the part of Paige untouched by everything that has happened in her life — losing her mother, foster care, a dad in prison. She shows up regularly, speaking directly to us (and to Paige) with a hilarious and incisive wisdom of the all-knowing child.

McMillian created the series and executive produces alongside Yvette Lee Bowser, who also serves as showrunner via her overall deal with ABC Signature.

“This isn’t just my story,” said McMillan in a statement. “It’s the story of millions of people dealing with the effects of mass incarceration on their families, hearts, minds and bodies … and as writers, we wanted to come to these flawed but super-lovable characters from the place of empathy, humor and soul that they deserve.”

Joy Gorman Wettels via Anonymous Content and Jen Braeden are also executive producers. The series is produced by ABC Signature.
