The trailer is here for Clement Virgo’s Steal Away, opening in US and Canadian theaters July 17 via Elevation Pictures.
Mallori Johnson and Angourie Rice lead the film as Cécile and Fanny, two teenage girls drawn into an obsessive bond after Cécile, a mysterious refugee, is taken in by Fanny’s wealthy family. As their relationship deepens, desire and jealousy surface, gradually pulling both girls into a world far darker than it appears.
Set in a stylized environment that blends elements of occupied Europe, the Antebellum South and Algiers, the film draws from Karolyn Smardz Frost’s non-fiction book Steal Away Home and unfolds as part coming-of-age drama, part psychological thriller and part gothic horror. Johnson and Rice are joined by Lauren Lee Smith as Florence, Idrissa Sanogo as Rufus and Nola Elvis Kemper as Alberta, with Denise M’Baye, Gloria Mampuya, Isabelle Menal, Arnold Pinnock and Hilde Van Mieghem rounding out the ensemble.
The film is produced by Virgo, Damon D’Oliveira, Peter De Maegd and Tom Hameeuw, with cinematography by Sophie Winqvist, music by Fjóla Evans and editing by Jorge Weisz. Production companies include Conquering Lion Pictures, 2CFilm and Potemkino.
Steal Away premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, where it marked Virgo’s sixth consecutive TIFF premiere, and later screened at the Atlantic Film Festival and Santa Barbara Film Festival.
