‘When a Witness Recants’ Revisits the Harlem Park Three’s 36-Year Wrongful Conviction [TRAILER]

HBO has set a November 17 premiere date for When a Witness Recants, director Dawn Porter’s documentary examining what’s been called the longest combined wrongful conviction case in U.S. history. The film will stream on HBO Max and is executive produced by Ta-Nehisi Coates.

The documentary centers on the case of the “Harlem Park Three”, Andrew Stewart, Ransom Watkins, and Alfred Chestnut, who were convicted as teenagers and spent 36 years in prison for the 1983 murder of 14-year-old DeWitt Duckett at Harlem Park Junior High in Baltimore. All three were innocent. The film is adapted from a 2021 New Yorker article by Jennifer Gonnerman and traces how coerced testimony from minor eyewitnesses, pressured as teenagers to lie on the stand, led directly to their wrongful convictions. Lauren Lipscomb, chief of the Baltimore State’s Attorney’s Conviction Integrity Division, who helped secure their release, has called it “the most egregious wrongful conviction case in my career.”

Coates, who grew up in the same West Baltimore community as the case, rediscovered the story as an adult and frames it in the film as both a defining turning point for Baltimore’s Black community and a glaring example of a broader national pattern of racially charged police misconduct. The film blends archival footage, animated sequences created by artist Dawud Anyabwile, and 2022 deposition footage, including a notable scene in which the three exonerated men meet face-to-face with one of the witnesses who recanted testimony that helped convict them decades earlier.

Speaking after a screening at DC/DOX in June, Andrew Stewart said the film closes a painful chapter of his life while giving him a platform to help others, adding that he hopes it also highlights the better parts of his life since his release, including finding love at 53. Alfred Chestnut described watching the film as emotional every time, saying he doesn’t take any of his blessings for granted.

When a Witness Recants premiered at Sundance in January and won the Audience Award at the Mill Valley Film Festival. The film is produced by Porter alongside Jennifer Oko and Miriam Weintraub, with Coates, Kenyatta Matthews, Kamilah Forbes, Eli Holzman, Aaron Saidman, and Gonnerman executive producing, alongside Nancy Abraham, Lisa Heller, and Sara Rodriguez for HBO.

With a wrongful conviction this lengthy now reaching a major platform alongside Coates’s name and a widely praised festival run behind it, the documentary enters its HBO premiere already positioned as one of the more significant true-crime releases of the year.
