Disney+ and Hulu have unveiled the gripping trailer for A Thousand Blows, a six-part bare-knuckle boxing drama set to premiere on February 21. The series, created by Peaky Blinders mastermind Steven Knight, dives into the gritty, violent underworld of 1880s Victorian London. Led by Stephen Graham (Boardwalk Empire, Boiling Point) and Malachi Kirby (Small Axe), the show promises a powerful narrative of survival and rivalry in one of history’s most unforgiving eras.

The trailer sets the tone immediately, introducing Graham as Sugar Goodson, a ruthless boxing kingpin who dominates London’s East End. Kirby stars as Hezekiah Moscow, a Jamaican immigrant navigating the perilous streets of post-industrial London alongside his best friend, Alec Munroe, portrayed by Francis Lovehall. The duo’s journey into the brutal world of illegal boxing pits them against Goodson and brings them into the orbit of Mary Carr, played by Erin Doherty (The Crown), the notorious leader of the all-female Forty Elephants gang.

As the trailer unfolds, Hezekiah is drawn into a high-stakes battle for survival and success. Mary Carr, seeing an opportunity to expand her criminal empire, takes Hezekiah under her wing, setting up a collision course with Goodson. “You can be the next champion,” Alec tells Hezekiah, while Sugar warns Mary, “I want him off my patch.” The tension boils over in a whirlwind of fists, alliances, and rivalries, underscored by the adrenaline-pumping track “War” by Aitch and ArrDee.

The ensemble cast features Jason Tobin (Warrior), James Nelson-Joyce (Happy Valley), Hannah Walters (Boiling Point), Darci Shaw (The Irregulars), Nadia Albina (The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself), and Daniel Mays (Line of Duty), among others.

Knight, who serves as creator, lead writer, and executive producer, collaborated with a team of emerging writers, including Ameir Brown, Insook Chappell, Harlan Davies, and Yasmin Joseph. The series is brought to life by directors Tinge Krishnan, Nick Murphy, Ashley Walters, and Coky Giedroyc, who also serve as executive producers.

Produced by Matriarch Productions, The Story Collective, and Water & Power Productions, the series also boasts contributions from historian Professor David Olusoga as an executive producer. Knight expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “This is a story rooted in the resilience and ambition of extraordinary individuals navigating extraordinary challenges.”

A Thousand Blows will debut on Disney+ in the UK and Ireland and stream on Hulu in the U.S., offering a visceral look at the intersection of ambition, power, and survival in Victorian London. With its rich storytelling, dynamic performances, and unflinching portrayal of the criminal underworld, the series is poised to be a must-watch this February.
