Netflix’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s epic graphic novel series “The Sandman” has just unveiled the final three siblings in the Endless Family for its long awaited Season 2. Drumroll, please: Adrian Lester will portray Destiny, Esmé Creed-Miles is set to play Delirium, and Barry Sloane steps into the role of The Prodigal.
In the original comic series, The Prodigal is known as Destruction, the estranged Endless sibling. Netflix has carefully labeled Sloane’s character as “The Prodigal,” which is how the character is referred to in the early volumes of Gaiman’s story. This trio’s casting indicates that Season 2 will dive into the beloved “Season of Mists” storyline from the graphic novels.
These new faces will join the returning Endless siblings from Season 1: Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), Desire (Mason Alexander Park), Despair (Donna Preston), and, of course, Dream, played by Tom Sturridge.
For those who need a quick refresher, Season 1 introduced us to Dream, aka the Sandman, a powerful cosmic being who controls all dreams. When Dream is captured and imprisoned for over a century, he must journey through different worlds and timelines to rectify the chaos caused by his absence.
Season 2 will see the return of fan favorites including Patton Oswalt as Matthew the Raven, Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer Morningstar, Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine, Ferdinand Kingsley as Hob Gadling, Stephen Fry as Gilbert, Asim Chaudhry as Abel, Sanjeev Bhaskar as Cain, Vanesu Samunyai as Rose Walker, and Razane Jammal as Lyta Hall.
“The Sandman” series is brought to life by creators Neil Gaiman, showrunner Allan Heinberg, and David S. Goyer, with all episodes directed by Jamie Childs. Produced by Warner Bros. Television, the show faithfully adapts Gaiman’s iconic DC Comics series, co-created with Sam Keith and Mike Dringenberg.
Despite being renewed for a second season in November 2022, production faced delays due to the Hollywood writers’ and actors’ strikes in the summer of 2023. Gaiman had been on the lookout for the perfect actors to complete the Endless family, and it looks like his search has paid off.
Gaiman shared with Variety shortly after the first season’s release that he was diligently scouting actors for the roles of Destruction and Delirium, often sending emails to Allan Heinberg whenever inspiration struck.
With these new additions, the Endless Family is now complete, promising fans an even more immersive and enthralling experience in Season 2.
