Hulu has opted not to renew Mindy Kaling’s romantic comedy series Not Suitable for Work for a second season, two months after its nine-episode first season concluded on the streamer. Warner Bros. Television, which produced the series, is shopping it to other platforms for a potential new home.
The cancellation leaves multiple storylines unresolved. The two-episode finale ended on a significant cliffhanger, with all five leads caught up in love triangles and two of them, Davis and AJ, facing professional uncertainty after standing up to their arrogant boss Bill (Jay Ellis).
Kaling had been hopeful about a renewal at the time of the finale. “Our writers room has been up for Season 2, which is wonderful,” she told Deadline in June. “Of course, the big question is whether we’ll get an official pickup for production. I keep my fingers crossed. I love the show so much.”
The series starred Ella Hunt as AJ, Avantika Vandanapu as Abby, Will Angus as Davis, Jack Martin as Josh, Nicholas Duvernay as Kel and Jay Ellis as Bill, centering on five work-obsessed twenty-somethings striving for professional success and personal happiness in Manhattan’s Murray Hill neighborhood. Though it drew mixed critical reception with a 54% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the show found an audience with an 82% viewer approval rating on the platform.
Not Suitable for Work completed Kaling’s loose trilogy inspired by her own life, following Never Have I Ever, which chronicled the teen experience, and The Sex Lives of College Girls, set in college. The cancellation is the latest in a string of YA setbacks at Hulu, which also recently passed on pilots Buffy: New Sunnydale, Foster Dade and Don’t Get High.
