The cast of Universal Pictures’ upcoming Snoop Dogg biopic continues to take shape. Algee Smith has been set to play Warren G and Camron Jones will portray Tupac Shakur in Snoop, the definitive biopic of the entertainment mogul and rap legend, set for release August 6, 2027.
The film chronicles the life of Calvin Broadus Jr., who emerged from Long Beach, California as a teenager to become not only one of the biggest rappers of the 1990s but one of the most recognizable pop culture icons of his generation. The biopic traces his roots and rise, from his early days in Long Beach through his entry into the music industry, his world-defining partnership with Dr. Dre and his time at Death Row Records alongside some of the most legendary figures in West Coast hip-hop history.
The two join a previously announced ensemble that includes Jonathan Daviss (Outer Banks) as Snoop Dogg, Myles Bullock as Dr. Dre and Lauren London as Snoop’s late mother Beverly Tate, also known as Beverly Broadus-Green, who passed away in 2021.
Both Warren G and Tupac were central figures in Snoop’s rise. Warren G, whose real name is Warren Griffin III, was a key member of the West Coast hip-hop scene and a pivotal figure in Snoop’s early career. The two, along with Nate Dogg, formed a trio called 213 in the early 1990s, and it was Warren G who introduced Snoop to Dr. Dre, setting in motion one of the most defining partnerships in hip-hop history. Tupac and Snoop were labelmates at Death Row Records and remained close friends until Tupac’s death in 1996.
Smith is known for his breakout performance portraying Ralph Tresvant in BET’s The New Edition Story and for roles in Euphoria, Detroit and Judas and the Black Messiah, the latter two earning him NAACP Image Award nominations. He will also appear alongside Jamie Foxx in the upcoming Netflix drama Fight for ’84 and is set as a series regular in HBO’s American Blue opposite Milo Ventimiglia. Jones is best known for his starring role as Bishop on Amazon’s Panic and will next appear as Quan in Season 3 of Starz’s P-Valley.
Craig Brewer directs from a script he rewrote based on Joe Robert Cole’s original screenplay. The film is produced by Brian Grazer and Allan Mandelbaum for Imagine Entertainment, alongside Snoop Dogg and Death Row Pictures president Sara Ramaker. The film will incorporate music from Snoop Dogg’s vast catalog and is the first project under Death Row Pictures’ overall deal with NBCUniversal Entertainment. Production is set to begin mid-September in and around Los Angeles.
Snoop opens in theaters August 6, 2027.
Smith’s credits include HBO’s Euphoria, BET’s miniseries The New Edition Story, Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit, The Hate U Give, and Shaka King’s Judas and the Black Messiah each earned him NAACP Image Award nominations. He is also set to appear alongside Jamie Foxx as boxing legend Pernell Whitaker in Netflix’s Fight for 84.
Snoop opens in theaters August 6, 2027.
