Andra Day is set to join season two of Disney+’s ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ as Athena, the goddess of wisdom and mother of Annabeth Chase (portrayed by Leah Sava Jeffries), Disney announced on Sunday. The casting reveal, which was part of Disney’s D23 presentation in Brazil, featured a video statement from Day expressing her excitement: “I can’t wait to bring her to life and work alongside such talented actors. Stay tuned for this epic journey, y’all.”
Day’s Athena will appear alongside a returning cast that includes Walker Scobell as Percy, Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth, Aryan Simhadri as Grover, and Charlie Bushnell as Luke. New additions to the cast include Daniel Diemer as Tyson, Percy’s cyclops half-brother, and Tamara Smart as Thalia Grace, the demigod daughter of Zeus. Season two will also feature guest appearances by Sandra Bernhard, Kristen Schaal, and Margaret Cho, who will portray the Gray Sisters.
Season two, scheduled for release in 2025, will follow the events of The Sea of Monsters, the second book in Rick Riordan’s beloved series. Returning to Camp Half-Blood a year after season one, Percy faces new challenges: his friendship with Annabeth is shifting, Grover has gone missing, and he discovers he has a cyclops brother. As forces led by Kronos threaten the camp, Percy embarks on a journey into the perilous Sea of Monsters.
The show’s production team includes Riordan as executive producer alongside showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz. Also producing are Rebecca Riordan, Craig Silverstein, Bert Salke, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, D.J. Goldberg, James Bobin, Jim Rowe, Albert Kim, Jason Ensler, and Sarah Watson.
Day, who earned an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe for her portrayal of Billie Holiday in The United States vs. Billie Holiday, adds her talent to a lineup that already boasts an ensemble cast with an array of notable guest stars. Disney’s adaptation of Percy Jackson and the Olympians continues to captivate audiences with its retelling of the modern demigod’s adventures, bringing new life to Riordan’s classic tale.
