Art Evans, a versatile actor whose career spanned over five decades with memorable roles in Die Hard 2 and A Soldier’s Story, has died at the age of 82. Evans’ passing was confirmed by his representative, who shared that the actor died on saturday, december 21, from complications related to diabetes.
In a statement, his wife, Babe Evans, said, “We are heartbroken to share that Art has passed away. Please respect our privacy at this time. A memorial will be held for friends and family to attend at a later date. Thank you.”
Evans’ remarkable career began at Frank Silvera’s Theater of Being in Los Angeles, where his talent shone in productions like The Amen Corner, which later transferred to Broadway in 1965. He transitioned seamlessly to the screen, earning his first major film credit in John Carpenter’s 1983 thriller Christine, where he portrayed the ill-fated first victim.
He gained further acclaim with his role in A Soldier’s Story, acting alongside Adolph Caesar and a then-rising Denzel Washington. Many remember him best as Leslie Barnes, the air traffic control tower employee who aids Bruce Willis’ John McClane in thwarting terrorists in Die Hard 2.
Evans’ impressive body of work included over 120 film and television credits. His filmography featured standout roles in Fright Night, School Daze, Tales from the Hood, Metro, and National Lampoon’s Class Reunion. He also graced television screens in iconic series like MASH*, Hill Street Blues, Monk, The X-Files, and Family Matters. On A Different World, Evans was unforgettable as Mr. Johnson, father to Ron Johnson, played by Darryl M. Bell.
Throughout his career, Evans was celebrated for his ability to bring depth and authenticity to every role. His presence added gravitas to dramas and brought humor and warmth to lighter fare, endearing him to audiences across generations.
