The Ma sequel just got even more exciting.

Blumhouse has found its writer for the follow-up to the 2019 revenge thriller Ma—and it’s two-time Emmy winner Ashley Nicole Black. Known for her sharp, emotionally grounded writing on Ted Lasso and Shrinking, Black will pen the script for the next chapter of Sue Ann’s twisted story. Octavia Spencer is confirmed to return in the lead role.

The announcement comes just days after Blumhouse revealed the sequel at its Business of Fear symposium, where the studio discussed the evolving horror genre and its breakout subgenres—including “Revenge Horror,” where Ma squarely fits.

The original film, directed by Tate Taylor and written by Scotty Landes, became a box office success, earning over $60 million worldwide. It followed Sue Ann, a lonely woman who invites a group of teenagers to party in her basement—only for things to take a terrifying turn. Spencer’s performance turned the character into a viral horror icon.

Ashley Nicole Black brings a dynamic and fresh voice to the sequel. In addition to her writing, she’s also a performer and producer, with credits that include A Black Lady Sketch Show, Bad Monkey, and Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. She’s also been nominated for multiple NAACP Image Awards for her writing.

No director or release date has been announced yet, but with Spencer returning and Black now scripting the film, Ma 2 is officially on the way.
