Stormzy is officially entering the world of film with Big Man, the debut project under his new production company, #MerkyFilms. The short film, produced in association with Apple, will premiere on YouTube on June 18 at 8 p.m. BST.
Directed by Oscar-winner Aneil Karia (The Long Goodbye, Top Boy), Big Man stars Stormzy—credited as Michael “Stormzy” Omari—as Tenzman, a fictional former rap star going through a period of personal and creative stagnation. The story follows Tenzman as he forms a bond with two teenagers, Klevis and Tyrell, played by Klevis Brahja and Jaydon Eastman. Their connection inspires a renewed sense of purpose and reawakens his passion for music.
The film was shot entirely on the iPhone 16 Pro by cinematographer Stuart Bentley and blends humor, vulnerability, and reflection on youth. The project marks Stormzy’s first lead acting role.
The launch of Big Man also marks the official start of #MerkyFilms, an extension of Stormzy’s broader #Merky brand, which includes #Merky Books, a record label, and a charitable foundation. The film was written by Akua Agyemfra, a longtime #Merky collaborator, with a focus on improvisation encouraged by Karia during production.
In addition to Big Man, #MerkyFilms has multiple projects in development, including a drama series, a biopic, documentaries, an animated project, and a mockumentary. Stormzy has also confirmed a development partnership with Netflix.
Jaydon Eastman, who stars as Tyrell, previously played Young Simba in The Lion King UK tour and originated the role of Young Michael Jackson in the West End’s MJ The Musical. Klevis Brahja makes his acting debut in Big Man after being discovered on the street.
Karia’s other work includes the feature film Surge and the upcoming modern adaptation of Hamlet starring Riz Ahmed.
Stormzy has also revealed plans for a theatrical project in collaboration with the National Theatre’s Indhu Rubasingham, which is currently in development.
Big Man premieres June 18 on YouTube.
