Ayo Edebiri to Recur on Abbott Elementary as Janine's Sister

The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri is joining the cast of “Abbott Elementary” as Ayesha Teagues, the sister of Janine (played by series creator Quinta Brunson).

Throughout the series, Janine mentions her complicated relationship with Ayesha. Edebiri will appear for the first time in tonight’s (Feb. 8) episode “Valentine’s Day” via FaceTime before returning for a larger storyline later in the season.

In the Valentine’s Day episode of “Abbott Elementary,” the Abbott teachers discuss their relationships and plans for the holiday. Janine finds out that one of her students has a crush on her and when she turns to a colleague for advice, she inadvertently learns a secret about another teacher. Meanwhile, Ava sits in on Jacob’s Black History class after receiving a complaint.

“Abbott Elementary” is executive produced by Brunson, Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker of Delicious Non-Sequitur Productions, and Randall Einhorn. The series is produced by Warner Bros. Television and 20th Television and airs on ABC at 9 p.m.

Edebiri is best known for her outstanding performance as Sydney Adamu in FX’s hit comedy-drama series “The Bear.” This role earned her recognition from numerous award shows such as the Gotham Awards, Critics’ Choice, the Indie Spirits, and the Screen Actors Guild. She is a highly talented writer as well, with credits including the popular Netflix shows “Big Mouth” and “Dickinson,” in which she played Missy and Hattie, respectively. She has also worked on NBC’s “Sunnyside” and FX’s “What We Do in the Shadows.”
