Brandy has expressed her enthusiasm for a potential return in the upcoming ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ sequel. Despite not being contacted about the new slasher film, the singer and actress, revealed to The Hollywood Reporter her readiness to reprise her role as Karla Wilson from 1998’s ‘I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.’
“I need them to give me a call because I survived in that movie!” Brandy declared. “I came out in the end, bloodied up, ready to go. I did not die in that film!”
Brandy also gave a shout-out to her co-stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., who headlined the original 1997 teen horror film and its sequel. Both actors are reportedly in discussions to return for the new installment. “Jennifer, Freddie, hit me up!” Brandy added.
The sequel’s news first emerged in February 2023, with reports from Deadline, Variety, and The Hollywood Reporter indicating that Sony Pictures was in the early stages of developing the project. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, known for co-writing ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ and directing Netflix’s ‘Do Revenge,’ is set to direct, with Leah McKendrick writing the script.
The franchise, based on Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel, follows friends being hunted by a hook-wielding killer after covering up a fatal car accident. Despite headlines about the planned sequel, Brandy was unaware of the project until THR inquired. “I didn’t know Sony was putting that together,” she said. “That’s interesting!”
Freddie Prinze Jr. has also expressed hope about reprising his role as Ray Bronson. “Negotiations are weird. One week they’re going great and the next week they’re going awful,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “We haven’t had an awful week so there could be an awful week [coming]. I have no idea, but I really don’t get too involved in it until a contract is signed.”
Prinze Jr. shared that both sides are motivated to finalize the deal. His connection with director Robinson, who previously worked with his wife Sarah Michelle Gellar, further fuels his optimism. “[Robinson] was the one to talk to me a year ago before the studio was even talking,” he noted.
Jennifer Love Hewitt, now 45, admitted to ET that she’s “honestly terrified” about returning but is eager to bring her character back with “26 years of angst, knowledge, kickassery… and have some fun.”
The new film will continue the original story, unlike the 2006 reboot and the 2021 Prime Video TV series, which deviated from the initial plot. The cast will include new faces such as Camila Mendes, Madelyn Cline, and Jonah Hauer-King.
Brandy’s career has seen a resurgence recently, with her reprising her role as Cinderella in Disney Channel’s latest ‘Descendants’ sequel and starring in A24’s psychological film ‘The Front Room.’ Additionally, the updated version of her 1998 hit song “The Boy Is Mine” by Ariana Grande has been receiving airplay.
“A resurgence!” Brandy exclaimed. “I’m still inspired. I love what I do. I’m just excited for everything to hit the scene and see what people think, and to see if people can still be inspired by what I do.”
